About our Parish
The parish of Willingale with Shellow Bowells is a fairly small rural village with a population of approximately 483. The main part of the village is clustered around two churches with the remainder of the properties in groups, scattered over a wide area. The church of St. Christopher sits in the same churchyard as the church of St. Andrew. St. Andrew's is not used on a regular basis and is in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust - see www.visitchurches.org.uk
Church History
Two Churches - One Churchyard!
Whilst not unique, two churches in one churchyard is a rarity. St. Andrew’s was built before 1130 AD. St. Christopher’s is now used for all regular worship and dates from around 1200AD, but there is evidence in legal papers that a wooden Saxon church was previously on the site. The existing building has been ‘improved’ by succeeding generations from the 14th century to the Victorian age. Currently there is a project to restore the bells of St. Christopher’s which is largely being carried out by volunteers within the community.
Mission Statement
The Parochial Church Council have adopted the following mission statement for St. Christopher's -
‘In the light of God’s call, and our situation here, our vision is that the church in the midst of this rural village should promote the work and importance of the Church of England within the life of the community and to maintain an audible and visible presence and we are ready to welcome and to encourage more parishioners to join our worship, particularly the younger members of the community.’
Style of Services
Eucharist services follow the Common Worship format and the Incumbent is assisted by a Server. Once a month a Family Service is held which is led by either the Incumbent or a lay person from within the church family. This service is of an informal nature and is designed to encourage more families with children to join the regular congregation. At the main festivals of Christmas, Easter and Harvest members of the wider community are invited to take part as readers etc.
